Guess what? 🌏 China has decided to take action against some U.S. companies and executives because the U.S. sold weapons to Taiwan.
China announced that starting December 5, they will impose countermeasures (which means actions taken in response) on 13 U.S. military companies and six senior executives. This is because the U.S. sold arms (weapons and military equipment) to Taiwan, and China is not happy about it.
But why is this a big deal? 🤔 Well, China considers Taiwan to be part of its country. This idea is called the “one-China principle.” When other countries sell weapons to Taiwan, China thinks it goes against this principle and interferes with their internal affairs.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, said that Taiwan is at the core of China’s core interests. That means it’s very important to them. They believe that helping Taiwan get more weapons could lead to problems and conflicts.
China is asking the U.S. to follow agreements they’ve made in the past, like the three China-U.S. joint communiques (which are important documents between China and the U.S.). They especially mention the one from August 17, 1982. China wants the U.S. to stop selling weapons to Taiwan and to not support any movements that might push Taiwan away from China.
In simple terms, China wants to keep peace and not have any conflicts over Taiwan. They hope the U.S. will understand and respect their wishes.
