Hey there! Did you hear about the big event happening in Riyadh? 🌍 The United Nations is hosting its biggest ever land conference called COP16, and it’s all about saving our planet’s land and fighting drought!
Leaders and experts from all over the world are meeting from now until December 13 under the theme “Our Land. Our Future.” It’s the first time this conference is happening in the Middle East and North Africa region!
So, what’s this all about? Well, did you know that by 2050, up to 7.5 billion people could feel the impact of drought? That’s like almost everyone on Earth! 😮 Drought means less water and can lead to food shortages, people moving away from their homes, and even problems between countries.
Ibrahim Thiaw, the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD (that’s the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification), says restoring our land is one of the best ways to tackle big challenges like climate change and food insecurity.
Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen AlFadley, shared that over 3 billion people are affected by land degradation every year because we lose 100 million hectares of land, forests, and grasslands. That’s a huge area—imagine losing land the size of Egypt every year! 😲
But here’s the good news: everyone at COP16 is working together to find solutions! They want to restore our soils, make our food production better for nature, and help our world become more resilient to droughts and sandstorms.
Isn’t it cool how countries can come together to save our planet? Maybe one day, you’ll be a part of such important meetings! Until then, let’s all do our part by taking care of the environment around us. 🌱
What do you think we can do to help the Earth? Share your ideas with friends and family!
