Did you know there’s a place on Earth with the cleanest air ever measured? π¬οΈ
A team of brave scientists has set sail on a big ship called the Investigator to find out more about it! π’ They left from Tasmania, a beautiful island at the bottom of Australia, on April 29 and will return on May 18.
Their mission? To study the super clean air over the Southern Ocean and see how human activities might be changing it. π
But why is this important? Well, the Southern Ocean helps soak up a lot of carbon dioxide (that’s a gas that can make Earth warmer) and heat from our atmosphere. So, any changes there can affect our weather and climate! βοΈπ§οΈ
Dr. Ruhi Humphries, an atmospheric scientist (thatβs someone who studies the air and what’s in it), says they’ll be using special instruments to measure tiny particles and gases in the air, as well as clouds and sunlight. π€οΈ
They want to understand how things like smoke from bushfires (big forest fires) and greenhouse gas emissions (gases from things like cars and factories that can trap heat) are changing our air. π₯π
This information will help scientists learn more about climate patterns in the Southern Hemisphere (that’s the bottom half of the Earth), especially since most of what we know comes from studies in the Northern Hemisphere. π§
Associate Professor Robyn Schofield from the University of Melbourne says this research is super important for improving weather and climate forecasts for places like Australia and beyond! πΊοΈ
Isn’t it amazing how exploring the cleanest air can help protect our planet? π Let’s cheer on these scientists as they sail the seas for science! πβ
