Dire wolves were ancient wolves that roamed North America during the Ice Age. They were bigger and stronger than today’s gray wolves, with powerful jaws and sharp teeth. You might have seen them in movies or TV shows set in prehistoric times!
Bringing Back the Look of Dire Wolves
Scientists at a company called Colossal Biosciences have used genetic engineering to create three special wolf pups that look like dire wolves. These pups are only a few months old, but they already weigh around 80 pounds (that’s like having 10 bowling balls!). When they’re fully grown, they might weigh up to 140 pounds!
How Did They Do It?
The scientists started by studying ancient DNA from fossils of dire wolves. They found special traits that made dire wolves unique. Then, they took blood cells from a living gray wolf and used a high-tech tool called CRISPR (it’s like tiny scissors for DNA!) to make changes in 20 different places in the DNA.
They put this new DNA into an egg cell from a dog and then placed it inside a mother dog. After about two months, the genetically engineered wolf pups were born!
Why Is This Important?
This amazing science might help us understand more about extinct animals and could even help save endangered species in the future. Colossal Biosciences also cloned four red wolves to help increase the population of these critically endangered animals.
