Landmark climate change case to open at top UN court

Big Climate Change Case Starts at the United Nations’ Top Court 🌍

Hey there! Have you heard about the big news in climate change? Starting this week, the world’s top court at the United Nations (called the International Court of Justice, or ICJ) is hosting a huge case all about our planet’s future! 🌎🌱

What’s Happening?
Over the next two weeks, judges from all around the world will listen to nearly 100 countries discuss what everyone should do to fight climate change and help those most affected by it.

Why Is This Important?
Small island nations like Vanuatu are worried. 🌊🌴 Because of rising sea levels, some islands could disappear underwater! In the last decade, sea levels have gone up by about 4.3 centimeters (that’s like stacking 4 pencils!), and some places in the Pacific Ocean have risen even more.

The Big Questions
The judges will try to answer two main questions:

  1. What should countries do under international law to protect our planet from harmful greenhouse gas emissions?
  2. What happens if governments don’t act and their actions (or lack of actions) hurt the environment, especially for small islands and future generations?

Did You Know?
The Earth’s temperature has warmed by about 1.3 degrees Celsius since olden times before machines and factories. This might not sound like much, but it can lead to big changes like stronger storms, heatwaves, and melting ice caps. 🥵❄️

What’s the Goal?
Even though the court’s decision won’t force countries to act, it can be a powerful message. It might encourage leaders to make better laws to protect our environment. Plus, it can help in future legal cases pushing for action against climate change.

Working Together
Recently, countries agreed to collect at least $300 billion each year by 2035 to help poorer nations deal with climate disasters. But experts say we might need up to $1.3 trillion! That’s a huge difference. This case might help highlight the need for more support.

How Does This Affect You?
Climate change isn’t just about polar bears and ice caps. It affects all of us! From the air we breathe to the weather we experience. By understanding what’s happening, you can be part of the solution. Maybe you’ll be the one to invent a new way to reduce pollution or spread the word about protecting our planet! 🌳💡

What Can You Do?
– Learn more about climate change.
– Talk to your friends and family about saving energy.
– Plant a tree or start a garden.
– Reduce, reuse, and recycle! ♻️

Every little bit helps. Let’s take care of our Earth together!
