Have you ever seen a building that looks like a giant doughnut made of earth? ๐ฏ Welcome to the world of Fujian Tulou! These amazing earthen fort-like buildings are found in Guanyang Village in southeast China’s Fujian Province, and they’re over 700 years old!
What are Fujian Tulou?
The Tulou are big, round or square buildings made from packed earth. They were built by the Hakka people as shared homes for many families. Imagine living with all your friends and relatives in one big house! The walls are super thick, keeping everyone inside safe and cozy.
A Village Comes Alive Again
Since being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, Guanyang Village has been buzzing with new energy. They’ve refurbished the insides of these ancient buildings, turning them into fun places like homestays, cafes, and restaurants. Travelers from all over the world come to experience what it’s like to live in a Tulou!
Youth Returning Home
Because of all the excitement, young people are moving back to the village to start their own businesses. The village’s average income has tripled since 2008! ๐ฐ
A Model for the Future
Zhang Haitao, head of the county’s culture and tourism bureau, says, “Our aim is to make Guanyang Village a model for rural revitalization.” The village is showing the world how preserving culture and embracing new ideas can go hand in hand.
In fact, Guanyang Village was honored as one of the “Best Tourism Villages” by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 2024! ๐
Why It Matters
The story of Guanyang Village teaches us that by valuing our history and working together, we can build a brighter future. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll visit a Tulou or even help preserve something special in your own community!
