🌍 Hey there! Have you ever heard about COP29? It’s a big meeting where leaders from countries all over the world get together to talk about how to protect our planet from climate change. But guess what? They’re running out of time!
Right now, they’re trying to agree on how much money wealthy countries should give to help developing countries fight climate change after 2025. This is super important because climate change affects everyone, especially places that don’t have a lot of resources to deal with it.
Back in 2009, rich countries promised to give $100 billion every year by 2020 to help out. But now, developing countries are asking for at least $500 billion each year! That’s a lot of money, but it’s needed to make big changes.
Leaders like Adonia Ayebare, who represents a group called the G77 and China, are saying it’s time to get serious. They want a clear number so they can plan and make real progress.
But there’s a problem. The countries can’t agree on how the money should be given. Should it be free gifts (like grants) or should it include other types of help? Some countries think everyone should chip in, while others believe that the countries who have caused more pollution in the past should pay more.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging everyone to hurry up. He says we need a big push, especially when it comes to money, to fight climate change effectively.
People like Cedric Schuster from Samoa, a small island nation, are especially worried. Rising sea levels threaten to swallow up entire islands! He says, “The time for political games is over.” It’s a reminder that while leaders debate, real people and places are at risk.
So, will they reach an agreement before time runs out? Let’s hope so! After all, the future of our planet depends on the decisions they make today.
What do you think? How can we all help fight climate change? 🌱
