Hey everyone! 🌬️ Have you heard about Super Typhoon Man-yi? It recently hit the Philippines 🇵🇭, and it’s been pretty tough for the people there.
Over the weekend, Man-yi, which is a super strong storm, caused a lot of damage. So far, 9 people have sadly lost their lives 😔. The government’s Department of National Defense shared this news on Wednesday.
Thanks to the quick actions of the government, many villagers were moved to safer places before the storm arrived. This helped save many lives!
One of the places hit hardest was Catanduanes, an island province southeast of Manila. Imagine 4,000 houses getting damaged! 🏚️ Out of those, 500 were completely destroyed. Ariel Nepomuceno, an official from the Office of Civil Defense, said that Man-yi was really strong when it passed through there.
This wasn’t the first storm they’ve had this year. Man-yi was the 16th tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines in 2024. Before that, they had five storms between October and early November. That’s a lot of storms! ⛈️🌪️
All these storms brought heavy rain, which led to floods and landslides. These can be very dangerous because they can destroy homes and make it hard for people to get around.
The storms have also affected farms 🌾 and buildings 🏫. The damages to agriculture are over 7 billion pesos, which is about $119 million! That’s a huge amount. For infrastructure like roads and bridges, the damage is about 10.4 billion pesos, or $176 million.
