All around the world, we’re seeing more extreme weather events like hurricanes, heatwaves, floods, and wildfires. These are happening more often because of climate change, which is when the Earth’s average temperature gets warmer due to things like pollution.
But in the Asia-Pacific region (that’s places like China, Japan, Australia, and many island countries), these extreme events are happening even more!

- On average, the Asia-Pacific faces six natural disasters a year. That’s twice as many as other parts of the world!
- In 2022 alone, over 64 million people were affected by extreme weather in this region. That’s like the entire population of the United Kingdom!
- These disasters caused an estimated $57 billion in damages. That’s a lot of money! 💰
Why is This Happening? 🌍
Many countries in the Asia-Pacific have lots of people living in areas where natural disasters are common, like along coastlines where typhoons hit. Also, some of these countries have higher poverty rates, which makes it harder for them to prepare for and recover from disasters.

Because of these extreme weather events, many people have to leave their homes. In 2022, there were over 32 million people who had to move within their own countries because of disasters. That’s almost the population of Canada! And guess what? About 70% of them were from the Asia-Pacific region.
