Americans Want to See Tariffs on Price Tags 📋💲
Imagine going to the store, picking out your favorite gadget, and seeing exactly how much of the price is due to taxes or other costs. Wouldn’t that be helpful? 🛍️
Recently, there was a big discussion in the United States about showing tariff costs on product prices. Tariffs are extra fees that the government charges on goods imported from other countries. They can make things more expensive.
Amazon, a huge online shopping website, thought about adding the extra tariff costs on some of their product pages. But when U.S. President Donald Trump heard about this, he wasn’t happy! He even called Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, to express his displeasure. The White House said Amazon’s idea was a “hostile and political act.” 😲
Amazon responded by saying that they never actually added the tariff labels on their main website. They only discussed the idea for a smaller platform called Haul, but it didn’t happen in the end.
But what do regular Americans think about this? A reporter from CGTN went to New York City to find out. 🗽
Many people supported the idea of showing tariff costs. A teacher named Kateleen Mcdougal said, “I think tariffs should be displayed just like sales tax. That way, we can understand exactly where our money is going.” She believes that hiding these costs isn’t fair to shoppers. 🎒✏️
Tim Wallace, who works at a bank, agreed. He said, “Companies should indicate the extra tariff costs to make pricing more transparent.”
Most people interviewed felt that knowing about tariffs would help them make better choices when shopping. It would also help them understand how government decisions affect everyday prices.
