Did you know that in China, people welcome the Start of Spring with colorful cloth roosters? ๐๐ธ
The Start of Spring, or Lichun, is the first of the traditional Chinese 24 solar terms and marks the beginning of the spring season. This year, it falls on February 3. As temperatures rise and the earth awakens, everything begins to grow again!
In places like southern Shandong, central Hebei, and northern Anhui, people in rural areas make cheerful rooster decorations using colorful yarn and fabric scraps. They even fill the roosters’ bellies with beans or cotton to make them plump and cute!
But why roosters? In Chinese, the word for rooster is “ji“, which sounds just like the word for “fortune” or “good luck”! Because of this, parents often sew these handmade roosters onto their children’s sleeves or hats. It’s a special way to wish their kids happiness and good luck for the year ahead. ๐
Isn’t it amazing how a simple craft can carry so much meaning? Maybe you can try making your own colorful rooster to celebrate the coming of spring!
