What’s Yellow Rust?
Yellow rust is a fungus that attacks wheat plants, making them sick and lowering how much wheat we can harvest. This fungus spreads fast and can change every five years, making it tricky to stop. It causes about 10% of wheat crops around the world to be lost each year! That’s a lot of bread and pasta we could be missing out on. 🍞🍝
The Superhero Genes! 🦸♂️🧬
The team of scientists from the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences studied over 2,000 types of wheat from all over the world. They spent five years looking at how these wheats reacted to the yellow rust fungus, collecting over 47,000 records!
They found 431 special spots in the wheat’s DNA called resistance genes. Think of these genes like secret codes that help the wheat fight off the bad fungus. They even discovered three brand new genes that are especially good at protecting the wheat.
Why Is This Important?
By knowing where these resistance genes are, farmers and plant breeders can grow wheat that stays healthy for a long time. This means we’ll have more wheat, use fewer pesticides (which is better for the environment 🌍), and help feed more people around the world.
