Did you know that ships can be powered by something called green ammonia? π’π For the first time ever, a ship in China has used green ammonia as fuel!
This special ship, which helps out at the port, has two big ammonia fuel tanks on its deck. These tanks give power to the ship’s main engine, helping it move without using as much fossil fuel.
The ship was fueled, or “bunkered,” at a terminal in Dalian City, in northeast China’s Liaoning Province. This means they filled it up with green ammonia, just like how cars get gas at a gas station!
What’s really cool is that 91% of the ship’s energy comes from ammonia. π That means it’s using way less traditional fuel, which is great for the environment!
The green ammonia comes from the world’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia project. This project is in Chifeng City, in north China’s Inner Mongolia Region. They use special technology and 100% green electricity to make the ammonia.
But wait, what is ammonia? π€ Ammonia is usually used to make things like fertilizers. It has lots of energy, and when it’s burned, it only makes water and nitrogen gas, which are safe for the planet. This means ships using ammonia fuel can help keep our oceans cleaner! ππ
This is a big step towards making shipping more eco-friendly. Who knows, maybe one day all ships will run on green fuels like ammonia!
