Scientists from All Over the World Meet in Beijing to Talk Science! 🌏🔬
Hey there, science fans! Guess what? Nearly 1,000 scientists, scholars, and students from all around the world have gathered in Beijing, the capital city of China! 🎉 They’re meeting at something called the International Congress of Basic Science, or ICBS for short.
Over the next two weeks, they’ll be exploring the amazing world of math, physics, and computer science. Imagine some of the smartest people on the planet all in one place, sharing ideas and discovering new things! 🤯

Some really famous scientists are there too! Four Fields Medalists (that’s like the Olympics gold medal for math 🥇), three Nobel Prize winners, and two Turing Award winners (that’s a big award in computer science) are all attending. Cool, right?
Do you know Professor Shing-Tung Yau? He’s a super-famous mathematician, and he’s the president of the ICBS. He gave a speech about how there have been some big breakthroughs in math, physics, and computer science recently. He thinks we might be entering a new era where new ideas and technologies are going to change the world! 🚀🌟
Celebrating Lifelong Achievements 🎖️
Six amazing scientists were given a special award called the Basic Science Lifetime Award. This is the highest honor in basic science! It celebrates scientists who have made a big impact on the world. The awardees are Samuel C. C. Ting, Steven Chu, David Gross, Robert Tarjan, Shigefumi Mori, and George Lusztig. Congratulations to them! 🎊

The ICBS was started by Professor Yau in 2023 and is held every year. Its theme is “advancing science for humanity.” This year, there will be more than 500 sessions, including talks and lectures.
