πΌπ Exciting news for panda lovers! The first-ever locally-born giant panda twins in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) have been named Jia Jia and De De! Born last August at Ocean Park Hong Kong, these adorable cubs are bringing joy to everyone.
What’s in a Name?
The female cub is named Jia Jia. In both Cantonese and Mandarin, “Jia” sounds like “home” and “auspicious,” symbolizing good luck and happiness. It’s a name that brings warmth and hope! π‘β¨
The male cub is named De De, which means “to succeed.” It carries the wish for success in everything, and “De” also sounds like “virtue,” highlighting the good qualities that pandas represent. π π
A Community Celebration
The naming contest received over 35,700 name suggestions! π¬ People from all over shared their ideas, showing just how much everyone loves these panda twins. Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the names touched the judging panel’s hearts.
Growing Up Strong and Healthy
Jia Jia and De De now weigh over 21 kilograms each! πΌπΌ They’re growing fast and getting stronger every day. Ocean Park has opened a special area called the Giant Panda Adventure where the twins can play and learn new skills with their mom, Ying Ying.
