In the winter of 1942, some grave robbers in Changsha, a city in China’s Hunan Province, sneaked into an ancient tomb to steal artifacts. They found things like lacquerware, bronze swords, and a silk manuscript—which they thought was just an old handkerchief! 🧣
They sold these items to a merchant named Tang Jianquan. He didn’t realize how important the silk was either. It was later bought by another dealer, Cai Jixiang, who knew it was special and kept it safe, even when times were tough during wartime.
The Manuscripts Go Missing 😢
In 1946, Cai wanted to get better pictures of the manuscripts using special infrared photography. He went to Shanghai, where an American collector named John Hadley Cox offered to help. But guess what? Cox tricked Cai and smuggled the precious manuscripts to the United States! 🇺🇸
Cai tried to get them back, but he couldn’t. The manuscripts have been in the U.S. ever since. That’s almost 80 years away from their home! 🏠
Why Should They Come Back to China? 🇨🇳
Many people believe that cultural treasures like the Chu Silk Manuscripts belong in their home country. Professor Li Ling from Peking University has spent over 40 years researching and proving that these manuscripts are a significant part of China’s heritage and should be returned.
Even some American scholars agree! Professor Donald Harper from the University of Chicago says it’s clear the manuscripts belong to China and should go back. 📚
The Journey Home 🚢
Over the years, there have been attempts to return the manuscripts. In the 1960s, a collector named Dr. Arthur M. Sackler bought part of the manuscripts and wanted to give them back to China. Sadly, he passed away before he could do so.
Now, the manuscripts are in a museum in Washington, D.C. Many people hope that they will finally be returned to China, where they can be appreciated by everyone.
