In 2020, China’s Chang’e-5 mission made history by bringing back rocks from the moon. This made China the third country ever to collect moon samples, after the Soviet Union and the United States. But they didn’t stop there!
The following year, China completed the Chang’e-6 mission and became the first country to bring back rocks from the far side of the moon—the side that always faces away from Earth. 🌚 That’s like exploring a place no one has ever seen up close before!
Now, these moon rocks are being studied by scientists to learn more about the moon’s secrets. Two universities in the United States—Brown University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook—are among the lucky ones getting to study these lunar treasures. 🏫🔬

Wu Weiren, the chief designer of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, said that cooperation is key. He mentioned, “We currently recognize several key areas of international cooperation… Technological breakthroughs are essential, particularly to tackle the harsh conditions of the lunar South Pole… These obstacles must be overcome collaboratively.” 🤝
