China cultivates first-generation 'space highland barley'

China’s ‘Space Barley’ Returns to Boost Farming!

Guess what? 🚀 China sent barley seeds to space! Now, these special seeds are back on Earth to help farmers grow better crops.

The seeds are called highland barley, a grain that’s important in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. Scientists sent them into space on a satellite named Shijian-19. In space, the seeds were exposed to cosmic radiation and low gravity.

Why send seeds to space? Because space can cause tiny changes, or mutations, in the seeds. These changes might help the plants grow stronger, fight off pests, or survive in tough weather. 🌦️

After a 15-day trip, the seeds returned to Earth. Scientists in Shaanxi Province are now working with farmers from Shannan City in the Xizang Autonomous Region to plant these seeds. They hope to grow new barley plants that can produce more food and help farmers earn more money.

Dawa Sangzhub, who works to improve farming in Shannan, said, “We want to use technology to grow more grain. Space breeding can help us create better crops!”

This is a big step for farming! By using space science, China hopes to improve crops and support farmers. Maybe someday, we’ll all be eating food made from space-grown plants! 🌾✨
