Guess what? Kirsty Coventry has just made history! She was elected as the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday. That means she’s now in charge of the global Olympic Games! πŸŽ‰

Kirsty is not only the first woman but also the first African to hold this important role. At 41 years old, she was chosen by over 100 IOC members during their big meeting in Greece. She’ll officially start her new job on June 23, taking over from Thomas Bach, who was president since 2013.

In her first press conference, Kirsty talked about how strong the relationship is between the IOC and China. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ She said, “The relationship between the IOC and China is very strong, it always has been, and we will continue that way.”

She also mentioned how important it is for the IOC to have good relationships with all 206 National Olympic Committees around the world. 🌍 “The relationships with every single individual are extremely important,” she said.

Gao Zhidan, the director of the Chinese mainland’s General Administration of Sport and president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), sent Kirsty a letter to say congratulations! He said her election shows how much the Olympic family trusts and supports her.

Gao is sure that under Kirsty’s leadership, the Olympic Movement will reach new heights. He also said that the COC wants to keep working closely with the IOC to help the Olympics grow and develop even more.

Shen Haixiong, the president of China Media Group (CMG), also sent a letter to congratulate Kirsty. πŸ“¬ He said that the values Kirsty stands for match with CMG’s mission to share cultures and learn from each other. Shen is excited to keep cooperating with the IOC, especially as they get ready for the next Winter Olympics in Italy! ⛷️

He added, “We will continue to deliver a spectacular Olympic audio-visual experience to global audiences and further promote the Olympic Movement and its values.”
