Ne Zha 2, the sequel to the 2019 hit Ne Zha, tells the story of a legendary hero from ancient Chinese mythology. The movie has wowed audiences with its incredible visual effects, making it even more exciting than the first one!
The production team worked super hard to create scenes that no one has ever seen before. One big challenge was a scene where a huge army of sea monsters is all connected by chains. The director, Yang Yu (also known as Jiaozi), insisted that every monster had to be chained together for the story to make sense.
“Those chains were non-negotiable for me,” said Director Yang. “Our effects team had never faced such a task, so it required a lot of trial and error. It was a research and development process.”
The team didn’t give up! They put in tons of effort to make the director’s vision come true. Even when some of the work was given to top foreign visual effects teams, the results weren’t quite right. So the team in the Chinese mainland took it back and made it even better!
“We realized the strength of other countries and their advanced technologies,” Director Yang said. “We are still learning, and the gap is definitely closing.”
Thanks to their hard work, Ne Zha 2 has become the leader during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, breaking box office records left and right. As of Tuesday, China’s total box office earnings for 2025 have passed 10 billion yuan (nearly $1.4 billion)! That’s a huge achievement! 🥳
