Who Was Lin Moniang?

About a thousand years ago, in the 10th century, there was a young girl named Lin Moniang who lived on Meizhou Island in southeastern China. Lin was known for her kindness and bravery. She loved helping her neighbors and especially cared for sailors and fishermen.

A Heroic Act

One stormy day, Lin saw that some sailors were in trouble out at sea. Without hesitation, she tried to rescue them. Unfortunately, she lost her life during the brave attempt. But her courage didn’t go unnoticed!

Becoming Mazu, the Sea Goddess

After her death, people began to honor Lin Moniang as Mazu, which means “Mother Ancestor” in Chinese. They believed she became a guardian spirit, protecting sailors and fishermen from harm. 📿

Celebrating Mazu

Every year, on the eighth day of the first lunar month, the people of Meizhou hold a special festival. They carry a golden statue of Mazu around the island in a grand procession! 🏮🎉 Lots of people come to join the festivities, including many visitors from Taiwan. It’s a big celebration full of music, dancing, and colorful lanterns.
