Imagine having a robotic hand that moves just like a real one! 🤖✋
Scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have created an amazing new prosthetic hand that can do almost everything a human hand can do.
Our hands can do so many things because they have 23 degrees of freedom. That means they can move in 23 different ways! But most robotic hands can only move in a few ways and are often heavy and clunky.
But this new robotic hand is different! It’s super light, weighing only 0.37 kilograms, which is even lighter than a real human hand. And it can move in 19 different ways! That’s a big deal in the world of prosthetics.
How did they do it? They used something called shape-memory alloys (SMAs). These are special materials that can “remember” their shape and return to it when heated. They act like muscles in the robotic hand. They also used a special system that works like tendons in our bodies to help the hand move smoothly.
Because of all this cool tech, the hand can do lots of things. It can comb hair, write, shake hands, and even play chess! ♟️ It can copy 33 common ways we use our hands and even do six new ones, like using scissors, operating smartphones, or doing sign language.
They tested the hand with a 60-year-old lady who had lost her hand. She was able to learn how to use it in just half a day! She passed important tests that check how well a hand works.
What’s more, the hand can understand voice commands in 60 languages and 20 dialects! That means lots of people around the world can use it easily.
This new hand could help many people who need prosthetic hands. It might also be used in robots and in places where it’s hard for humans to work, like underwater or in space! 🌌
Isn’t technology awesome?
