Legacy Trails: Illuminating Spring Festival with fish lanterns

Glowing Fish Lanterns Light Up Chinese New Year in Xiangshan

Hey kids! 🎉 Did you know that in Xiangshan County, in east China’s Zhejiang Province, people celebrate the Spring Festival (that’s Chinese New Year) in a super colorful way? They make glowing fish lanterns! 🐟🏮

As the New Year approaches, skilled craftsmen are busy creating these amazing fish lanterns. But why fish? Well, in Chinese, the word for “fish” sounds like the word for “surplus” or “extra.” There’s a saying: “年年有余” (nián nián yǒu yú), which means “May you have surplus year after year!” So fish lanterns are a way to wish everyone a year full of plenty and joy.

In the coastal town of Xiangshan, making fish lanterns is a tradition that’s been handed down for generations. It’s not just about decoration; it’s a way for the people there to celebrate their connection to the sea and their hopes for prosperity.

Meet Mr. Bao Jiqin, an 80-year-old master craftsman from Xiangshan. He’s been making fish lanterns since he was young! 🧓✨ He started with carp lanterns but now designs all kinds of sea creatures like yellow croakers and cuttlefish. To make his lanterns look just right, he studies books and pictures of real fish.

Every year, on the 14th day of the first lunar month, there’s a big parade! People carry their glowing fish lanterns through the streets, lighting up the night and welcoming the new year. It’s a bright and joyful celebration that brings everyone together. 🎇

Isn’t it amazing how traditions like this can light up our world? Maybe you can make your own lantern to celebrate! 😊
