On Wednesday, a special court called the Court of International Trade in New York said that President Trump couldn’t put extra tariffs on things coming from places like Canada, Mexico, and China. This happened because some small businesses went to court and said that the president was using powers he didn’t have.
The law the president tried to use is called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (or IEEPA for short). But the court said this law doesn’t let the president add taxes on imports just like that.
We talked to Professor Sun Taiyi from Christopher Newport University to understand more. He said this is a big deal for President Trump because he often uses tariffs in his plans. Now, he might have to find other ways to do things.
