Hey there! ๐ Guess what? The United Nations (that’s like a big meeting of countries from around the world ๐) just made an important decision to help keep everyone safer online!
They have adopted a new set of rules called the UN Convention against Cybercrime. But what does that mean?
Well, cybercrime is when people use computers or the internet to do bad things, like hacking into computers, stealing money online, or spreading viruses.
This new treaty (that’s a special kind of agreement between countries) is meant to help countries work together to stop these cybercrimes!
Why is this important? ๐ค
Because with the internet, bad guys can do bad things from anywhere in the world. By working together, countries can catch these criminals and make the internet a safer place for everyone!
This is the first time in over 20 years that all these countries have agreed on rules about cybercrime. It shows that they think it’s really important to keep us all safe online.
The new rules will help protect people from things like terrorism, human trafficking (that’s when people are taken advantage of and moved from place to place against their will), and online financial crimes (like when someone steals money from a bank account over the internet).
It’s also going to help victims of these crimes and make sure that people who might need extra help are looked after.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Antรณnio Guterres, said he believes this will make cyberspace safer and wants all countries to join in!
Next year, in Hanoi, Vietnam ๐ป๐ณ, countries will be able to officially sign the treaty. Once 40 countries have signed and agreed to it, the rules will start to work!
Isn’t it cool when countries come together to make the world a better place? ๐
