Powerful Earthquake Shakes Vanuatu: What Happened?
Hey everyone! Something big happened recently on a small group of islands called Vanuatu 🌴. A strong earthquake shook the ground, and many people were affected. Let’s find out more about it and understand what earthquakes are.
What is Vanuatu?
Vanuatu is a country made up of many islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It’s a beautiful place with beaches, volcanoes, and friendly people.
The Earthquake
On Tuesday, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 hit Vanuatu’s capital city, Port Vila. A magnitude is a number that tells us how strong an earthquake is. The higher the number, the stronger the quake!
The earthquake caused buildings to shake, and sadly, some people were hurt. According to reports, at least 14 people lost their lives, and many more were injured 😢. Among those who passed away were two Chinese nationals who were in Vanuatu at the time.
Why Do Earthquakes Happen?
Earthquakes happen when the rocks under the Earth’s surface move suddenly. The Earth’s outer layer is made up of big pieces called tectonic plates. Sometimes these plates push against each other, and when they suddenly move, the ground shakes. That’s an earthquake!
Helping Each Other
After an earthquake, people around the world come together to help. Teams like the Red Cross and other organizations provide food, water, and medical care to those in need. Communities rebuild, and people support each other during tough times.
What Can We Do?
Even if we are far away, we can still help by learning about earthquakes and being prepared. Knowing what to do during an earthquake can keep us safe. Also, we can share kind thoughts and support for the people affected.
