Suzhou lies along the Grand Canal, one of the longest and oldest canals in the world. Its network of waterways made it a wealthy city long ago.
Marco Polo, the famous Italian explorer, visited Suzhou in the 13th century. He was amazed by its beauty and prosperity, and couldn’t stop talking about it!
Many of the stone bridges you can see today in Suzhou’s old district were already there when the famous merchant visited. Isn’t that cool? 😃
